About the Artist - R.L. (Randy) Butterfield

Randy was born on February 3rd, 1959 in Winnipeg, Canada. He is of Métis (Scottish and Cree), Welsh and Ukrainian descent.

From a very young age, he had a strong interest in both sports and art. After high school, he attended Medicine Hat College on a basketball scholarship, studying Visual Communication. Completing the two year diploma program there, he went on to further his education at the Alberta College of Art and Design in Calgary where instead of receiving an athletic scholarship he won an award for his artistic talent. He completed his four year Visual Communication diploma in 1984.

Randy worked in the Graphic Design field for 15 years as a junior and senior designer, art director and then ran his own freelance graphic design business winning numerous awards for his work. All the while, he continued to paint in his spare time.

In 1999, Randy, his wife Sandy and young daughter Bronwyn moved to Edinburgh for the year. While Sandy worked for BBC Scotland, Randy painted and looked after Bronwyn. He fell in love with the Scottish landscape, in particular the Isle of Skye. He started showing his work at The Torrance Gallery in Edinburgh that same year. Upon his return to Winnipeg, Randy moved towards more illustration work. He started teaching drawing at Red River College. He became a full time instructor in 2003 teaching both drawing and illustration in the graphic design department.

In 2009, Randy and his family, now including his youngest daughter Frances, went on a self-funded leave to the south of France. They spent that year in the small village of Montpeyroux in the Languedoc-Roussillon region. His work again was influenced by the landscape, in and around the Montpeyroux area.

Randy’s work can be found in the collections of Shell and Imperial Oil in Calgary, Parks Canada, the Regina Exhibition Board and numerous private collections in Canada and Scotland. He has participated in numerous group shows and has had three solo shows at the Fleet Galleries in Winnipeg, Canada.

His work has been shown at The Torrance Gallery in Edinburgh, Scotland and by Fleet Galleries in Winnipeg, Canada.
